What to Expect
There are many different types of facials. Facials can treat various concerns, including calming inflammation, treating redness, reducing breakouts, and more.
No matter what you are hoping to treat, your facial should include the following: a consultation, cleanse, exfoliation, mask, and moisturizer. You may also have additional steps like steam, extractions, or facial massage.
Consultation
There should always be a consultation before a facial, even if you are a seasoned visitor. This may only be a few minutes, but it’s an important step. The consultation helps your esthetician determine what’s best for your skin.
Your esthetician will ask you about your skin concerns (acne, aging, dryness, etc.), along with lifestyle and medication questions depending on the treatment you want.
Cleanse
There is no need to wear makeup to a facial, but it’s perfectly fine if you do. A thorough cleansing is always done at the start of to prepare your skin for the treatment.
Exfoliation
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, promotes cell turnover, and helps skincare products absorb better. Your exfoliation may be done using a gentle physical scrub, a chemical exfoliant, or even a washcloth.
Mask/treatment
The treatment may be a mask or a peel, but regardless of what it is, your treatment consists of using products with a high concentration of active ingredients to target your specific concerns.
For instance, you might get a mask that contains powerful brightening and hydrating ingredients.
How often should you get a facial?
After your first facial, you might be wondering how often you should get one. We suggest getting a facial every 4-6 weeks if you can, or at least once a season.
The goal of a facial is to help prevent problems from starting as well as treat existing concerns. It’s like exercising. You don’t get the same benefits from working out once a month as you do from working out consistently.
